    Review of Black Sea container market in 2014

    In 2014, Black Sea container terminals of Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled 2,610,623 TEUs including empty containers and excluding transshipment.

    The review provided to IAA PortNews by Informall BG covers only loaded containers – 1,854,623 TEUs which is a 0.56 percent increase against the year of 2013.

    In 2014, total turnover of loaded containers in the region increased by 0.56%, y-o-y

    The highest growth of container throughput was shown by Georgia and Romania. Ukrainian terminals, after their negative growth in the first half of the year, managed to achieve positive result in the third and the forth quarters.

    Imports account for 58.51% of containers handled in the region in 2014, exports – 41.49%. Loaded/empty containers ratio in the region is 71.04% / 28.96%.

    58.51% of containers handled in the Black Sea region

    As compared with the year of 2013, exports of loaded containers in the Black Sea region climbed by 7.85%. The growth was mainly driven by Georgia which showed the growth of 32.16% and Russia – 16.17%. Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine demonstrated slight growth. As for imports into the region, it declined by 4.04% mostly due to reduced imports to Ukraine (-24.44%) and Russia. Other countries showed increase of loaded containers imports.

    Handling of loaded containers in 2014 per country is as follows: Ukraine – 29.78%, Russia – 25.65%, Romania – 22.42%, Georgia – 13.80%, Bulgaria – 8.35%.

    As for total container throughput, the list of top five container terminal changed in 2014 with DPW (Constanta) having retained its leading position, HPC Ukraine (Odessa) falling from the 2nd to the 5th position, APMT Poti (Georgia) rising from the 3rd to the 2nd position, Novoroslesexport (Russia) and NUTEP (Russia) rising to the 3rd and the 4th positions accordingly.  The growth was demonstrated only by DPW and APMT Poti.

    As for operators of Black Sea lines, the list of leaders did not change in 2014: MSC, Maersk Line, CMA CGM, ZIM and ARKAS with only CMA CGM and ZIM having changed their positions.  The above lines control 71.58% of the market of loaded containers in the Black Sea region.

    The service of G6 (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL) was reorganized from the middle of 2014. OOCL moved to (ZIM) and G6 alliance became G5. In 2013 G6 members controlled 10.11% of total market share however in 2014 G5 members controlled only 6.22% of total market share.
