Leading shipping company Maersk has commenced the construction of a new cold store facility in St. Petersburg, ensuring that it is able to address the needs of the high-demand Russian market.
According to a statement, the three-chamber warehouse will offer specialized solutions that can be utilized to extend the life cycle of perishable goods, including fruit products.
On June 5, 2019, CEO of Maersk Søren Skou met with representatives of the regional and federal Russian administration and David McCann, CEO of Europe’s leading fruit company Fyffes, for a ceremony to announce the new warehouse.
Skou said: “Maersk is transforming to deliver integrated end-to-end solutions for our customers’ supply chains.
“While growing our Ocean activities in line with the market, investing in unbroken cold chain offerings is one of the levers we pull to accelerate our non-Ocean business and grow ahead of the market.”
The 23,700 square metre (sqm) facility, which is set to be built by Russian industrial developer PNK Group, will contain 35 docks and be able to serve a daily throughput of up to 200 trucks, as well as having a maximum storage capacity of 50,000 tons.
40% of the warehouse will be occupied by Fyffes, while the remaining space will be made available to other companies in the fresh and frozen produce sector.
With increased consumption and a growth in the reefer segment requiring new end-to-end solutions, specialised logistics for the storage and transportation of perishable goods, so they remain fresh for a longer time, is in much higher demand.
Zsolt Katona, Managing Director for Eastern Europe at Maersk, commented: “I am extremely proud of this project, which is the first such cold store on the Russian market.
“As Maersk, we are committed to helping our reefer customers in all aspects of their supply chain needs. Those needs go well beyond transportation and storage is a crucial element we are now addressing.
David McCann of Fyffes added: “Today’s ground-breaking is a very important milestone in Fyffes’ strategy to grow our business in Russia.
“As the largest importer of bananas in Europe, Fyffes is delighted to partner with Maersk in this new warehouse development, which will increase our ripening capacity in Russia to over 200 thousand boxes of bananas per week.”
