  • Deep-draft container port project in Kaliningrad region

    The project of a deep-sea container port on the Balga peninsula (Kaliningrad region) will most likely be revamped. Last December at a meeting of the Board of the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot) Deputy Transport Minister of Russia Viktor Olersky that the funds allocated for the port will be redirected to other regional port projects.

    "The project just didn’t go well," Olerksy said.

    At the same time, the The official considers as promising the projects for development of Kaliningrad port’s hinterland and creation of an industrial park there.

    "It is unlikely that Kaliningrad will become ever a transit port,” the deputy minister said. “Nevertheless, Kaliningrad does have the port potential and we should go on to develop it." The official explained that the funds reallocation issue will be decided in 2012.
