Greek owner cancels two bulk carriers at Odense shipyard

The Odense Steel Shipyard had their very last container carrier towed out from the shipyard yesterday for sea trial. The construction of this ship and a number of sisters has generated a deficit of DKK 562.3 million in 2008. However, it’s much better than in 2007, when the deficit was DKK 827 million. The turnover fell from DKK 6.6 billion in 2007 to DKK 5.2 billion in 2008.
The future is uncertain for the shipyard as the Greek Carras Group has cancelled two of eight cape-size units on order at Odense.
“We have been fully compensated for the orders”, explains Finn Buus Nielsen, CEO of Odense Steel Shipyard.
Carras Group has taken the necessary precautions towards the market for cape-size bulkcarriers. The market has fallen from more than USD 100,000 per day to below USD 10,000 per day.
