The construction of the floating power unit of the world’s first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) Akademik Lomonosov being built at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in Saint-Petersburg has come to the final phase. Two steam-generating units КЛТ-40С have been installed at the facility, United Shipbuilding Corporation says.
The first and the second 220-tonne units manufactured to the design of Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau were transported on September 27 and October 1 from workshop No 6 of the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard to the outfitting quay where they were installed by Demag crane in FPU reactor compartments in the presence of the representatives from Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, Rosenergoatom concern and the customer.
“Last time Baltiysky Zavod fulfilled this operation in 2001 when building the icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy, the last nuclear icebreaker of the Arctic series, said Aleksandr Konovalov, Production Director and Acting Director General of Baltiysky Zavod. – So, this milestone event says about the shipyard revival.”
According to Sergey Zavyalov, deputy Director General of Rosenergoatom concern, the construction now enters its final phase.
It started in 2008, then was frozen in the middle of 2011 and resumed in December 2012 when long negotiations resulted in the contract signed between Baltiysky Zavod-Sudostroyeniye LLC and Rosenergoatom concern. Under the contract, Baltiysky Zavod undertakes to deliver FPU on September 9, 2016.
FNPP Akademik Lomonosov is the lead project of the series of mobile low-capacity floating nuclear power plants designed by Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau. The capacity of its power unit is over 70 MWt and consists of two steam-generating units КЛТ-40С. The first FNPP is supposed to be based in Pevek (Chukotka). The plant is to be used for heat and power supply as well as for desalination of sea water.
The nuclear reactor is to be operated for 36 years.
