Admiralty Shipyards launches third submarine of project 636 (photo)

On August 28, 2014, Admiralty Shipyards OJSC (Saint-Petersburg) launched the Stary Oskol submarine of project 636, the third in the series of submarines being built for Russian Navy, press center of Admiralty Shipyards told IAA PortNews.

The submarine will then undergo outfitting and start contractor’s and state tests.

The hull works of the Krasnodar and outfitting of the Rostov-on-Don submarines are in progress under the supervision of the military acceptance committee and the naval command.

The fifth and the sixth submarines of project 636, the Kolpino and the Veliky Novgorod, are to be laid down in October 2014.

The series of 6 submarines will be delivered to the Black Sea Fleet by 2016. The crews of these submarines are trained at the Combined Training Center of Russian Navy.

The Stary Oskol of project 636 is the third submarine in the series being built by Admiralty Shipyards for RF Navy. Submarines of the modified 636 projects feature enhanced (compared to previous projects) combat characteristics.

Characteristics: NATO classification – Improved Kilo; surface speed – 17 knots; underwater speed – 20 knots; operational depth – 240 m; maximum dive – 300 m; cruising capacity – 45 days; crew – 52 persons, surface displacement – 2,350 t; submerged displacement – 3,950 t.
