Russia set to call for postponing introduction of stricter NOx emission standards
Russia is set to insist on postponing of the date for the entry into force of the international standards aimed at reduction of NOx emissions from ships, IAA PortNews cites Victor Olersky, Deputy Transport Minister of Russia, as commenting on his speech at the Danish Maritime Forum which opened in Copenhagen.
RF Ministry of Transport warns the international shipping community against the introduction of new NOx emission standards (this issue will be over again discussed at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London next week).
“The shipping industry will remain the most demanded means of transportation in the foreseeable future and it will be difficult to comply with the new requirements as the new technologies are not available enough. It will cost too much for the industry,” Victor Olersky believes.
In his speech at the Danish Maritime Forum Victor Olersky emphasized that the international community should carefully select the strategies aimed at regulation of the shipping industry. Besides, he was critical about the IMO’s efforts on the Polar Code.
