Large landing ship of the Pacific Fleet "Admiral Nevelskoy" has left port Vanino (Khabarovsk Territory) for port Kholmsk (Sakhalin) today, July 24, 2015. The voyage will take some 15 hours. According to the press center of Eastern Military District, the warship is to make three voyages at Vanino-Kholmsk route carrying passengers from the mainland to the island. On her first voyage the ship will deliver 190 passengers to Sakhalin.
From late June through July Vanino terminal is busy with servicing the flows of fishermen hired by Sakhalin based fishing companies in different regions of the Far East.
Two diesel-electric ships operating at the service, Sakhalin-8 and Sakhalin-9, can carry about 120 passengers, but voyages are not regular. The situation at the ferry terminal in Vanino was aggravated by the fierce storm which interrupted the service for several days. Hence the congestion of over a thousand of passengers waiting for a possibility to leave for Sakhalin. In response to requests of the Khabarovsk Territory authorities to help ease congestion of passengers and vehicles at the ferry crossing to Sakhalin the Russian Defense Ministry decided to provide the landing craft support.
