Cargo turnover at Georgia seaports up 9 percent, 20.2 million tons in 2009

Overall volume of freight traffics through sea ports of Georgia in 2009 amounted to 20.2 million tons, a y-o-y 9 percent rise. However, the Batumi port showed a 10 percent drop in cargo volumes, handling 7.8 million tons, the port of Poti transshipped 6.1 million tons, 24% down on 2008. Containers shipment via these port also declined by 28%, to 181.613 TEUs, Neftegazekspert reports.

At the same time, the ports of Supsa and Kulevi handling oil and petroleum products reported a significant gain. The port of Kulevi handled 2.1 million tons, a 62 percent growth, and 4.2 million tons of oil shipped via the port of Supsa, a sevenfold surge over 2008.

In 2009 2.859.000 ships called at the ports of Georgia and were handled, 6% less than in 2008. Poti port provided its services for 2.011 vessels (a 8% drop), Batumi port - 698 (a 10% reduction), the port of Kulevi - 99 ships (a 52% rebound), Supsa port handled 51 vessel, 6.4 times more over 2008.
