    Icebreaker Vladivostok hoists the flag

    Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has participated in the official ceremony of hoisting the RF national flag on a new diesel-electric icebreaker Vladivostok of project 21900 М. The ceremony was held on 23 September 2015 at Naberezhnaya Leitenanta Shmidta, St. Petersburg in the frame of the International Maritime Exhibition and Conferences of Russia – NEVA 2015.

    The ceremony was attended by General Director of Vyborg Shipyard PJSC Alexander Soloviev, Deputy Minister of Transport Viktor Olerskiy, Acting Head of Rosmorrechflot Sergei Gorelik, USC President Aleksei Rakhmanov, Vice-Governor of the Leningrad Region Dmitrii Yalov and other officials. RS CEO Sergey Sedov spoke at the ceremony on behalf of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

    According to Sergey Sedov, for many years the Russian classification society has been the world leader in developing high standards of maritime safety for icebreakers and ice class ships, enabling the RS to successfully participate and contribute to the implementation of the programme for the icebreaker fleet construction in Russia. "RS has been performing technical supervision of icebreakers and ice class ships for over a hundred years. Application of the RS rules allows considering the cutting edge scientific achievements, long-term operation experience, as well as all applicable national and international requirements during design and construction of these ships", highlighted the RS CEO.

    The newbuild is the next step as compared to the icebreakers Moskva and Sankt Peterburg built under project 21900. The new project ships with capacity of 16 MW are of high performance, considering the operation experience of the icebreakers built under the previous projects, when providing icebreaker assistance during winter navigation in the Gulf of Finland.

    The new generation icebreaker has been built to the RS class at the Vyborg Shipyard PJSC under the Federal Target Programme ‘Development of Transport System of the Russian Federation (2010 – 2020)’. The RS class notation: KM✪ Icebreaker6 [2] AUT1-ICS FF2 BWM EPP ECO HELIDECK Special purpose ship.

    The icebreaker Vladivostok is a two-decked ship with displacement of approximately 10 000 t, equipped with two 360° steerable azimuth thrusters and a steerable propeller. The ship is capable of breaking ice up to 1.5 m thick and designed for escorting large ships, towage, firefighting on floating objects and other facilities, transportation of cargoes and assistance to ships in distress.

    Main particulars:
     length – 119.8 m;
     breadth – 27.5 m;
     depth – 12.4 m;
     draught – 8.50 m;
     full displacement – 14 322 t;
     capacity of main diesel generators – 4 х 6750 kW;
     crew – 35 persons;
     special staff – 22 persons.

    In addition to Vladivostok, two more vessels of this project Murmansk and Novorossiysk are being built to the RS class.

    Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is an internationally recognized classification society, established in 1913. Among others, RS has participated in the following projects: icebreaking salvage ship with asymmetric hull Baltika, multipurpose icebreaking supply vessels Vitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov, 25 MW diesel-electric icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin, 60 MW dual-draught nuclear icebreaker Arktika.
