Rail traffic via the ports of Latvia drop 12.9%, to 3.68m tons this January

Volumes of commodities transported by railroads through the ports of Latvia fell 12.9% from a year earlier, reaching 3.68 million tons. Total volumes of commodities carried by the Latvian Railway in January 2010 decreased by 6%, to 4.6 million tons (vs January 2008), The Baltic Course reports.

The volume of exports amounted this early year to 194.100 tons, a 63.4 percent gain. Imports also grew 16.4%, at 365.700 tones.

Railroad shipments experts said the reported decrease in volumes by LDz Cargo was primarily due to the diversification of coal shipments in the direction to Russian Far East.
