Construction set to begin next year on Belokamenka large-tonnage offshore shipbuilding centre

Work is slated to begin in 2017 on the construction of the Center of large tonnage offshore shipbuilding in Murmansk, Russia based Belokamenka. The shipbuilding complex project will be implemented by NOVATEK in conjunction with the regional government. The project was discussed at a meeting of the Murmansk Oblast government, the government press-office said.

Murmansk region Governor Marina Kovtun said one of the objective is to involve in the ambitious investment project in Belokamenka the potential of local workforce and businesses. She tasked the Murmansk region's Ministry of Industry and Enterprise Development and the Ministry of Education and Science to work out the plan.

Members of the working group that addresses the issues of education and training of skilled employees for the future offshore shipbuilding complex. The ad hoc group set to meet soon at the local industrial college, where the management of Kolskaya Shipyard will review the possibilities of the educational institution for the training of technical specialties.

In addition, the regional governor ordered to prepare a list of local suppliers who might be involved in the project.

Today Kolskaya Shipyard LLC conducts survey on the construction site of the future shipyard. The project is in its pre-investment phase: the assessment and project authorization document is expected to be completed late this year.

If everything goes well, the construction can begin as early as next year. Investments into the project are estimated at some RUB 25 billion. With its maximum capacity the shipyard's workforce will be at least 3,000 of skilled employees.

The Belokamenka large-tonnage offshore shipbuilding centre project by the Decree of February 9, 2016 is granted the status of strategic investment project of the Murmansk region.

The project envisages the creation of a dedicated shipyard, consisting of two 400 x 200m dry docks to build state-of-the-art offshore facilities: reinforced concrete gravity based structures (GBS) for LNG plants, offshore drilling and production platforms for projects in the Western sector of the Arctic, to build and maintain in partnership with leading shipbuilding corporations large-capacity facilities to ensure smooth operation on the Northern Sea Route. The project is implemented by Murmansk Oblast registered Kolskaya Shipyard, a subsidiary of NOVATEK.
