On May 26, 2016, OJSC Zelenodolsk Plant named after M. Gorky launched the second Gepard-3.9 frigate dezigned by Zelenodolsk Design Bureau for Vietnamese Navy.
Gepard-3.9 is made to fight airborne, underwater and overwater enemy, light objects under and above water, install active and passive obstacles, install mines, escort and guard convoys during conflicts,
guard and patrol the state border and economic zones, prevent smuggling, carry out anti-poaching and anti-piracy activities; provide assistance to vessels in distress; search and rescue people.
Having a displacement of nearly 2,200 tonnes, the ship is fully armed for anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-aircraft roles.
The contract for construction of the first two frigates of Project Gepard - 3.9 for Vietnam was signed in 2006. The flag hoisting ceremony onboard the first ship named Dinh Tien Hoang was held in March 2011, onboard the second ship named Lee Thay To – in August 2011.
Intergovernmental contract for construction of the second pair of Gepard - 3.9 frigates was signed in October 2012. The ships were laid down in September 2013.
