MAN Diesel & Turbo wins order for GenSets for Tier II/III-compliant patrol vessels from Italian Navy

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won the contract to supply the first shipset (plus an option for six more, to be confirmed) of GenSets for the multipurpose, offshore patrol vessel – Pattugliatore Polivalente d' Altura (PPA) – program. Each vessel will feature 4 × 12V175D GenSets, each delivering 1,640 kW. The newbuildings have been ordered as part of the Italian Navy’s “Programma di Rinnovamento” - fleet renewal, a major project that also features other vessels with MAN technology, the company said in its press release.

MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that the new GenSets were chosen for their highly reliable and fuel-efficient design that meets the multiple scenarios and demands that such patrol vessels encounter.

Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and reference player in naval shipbuilding, will build the ships in Italy. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for 2021, with subsequent deliveries in 2022, 2023, 2024 (two units) 2025 and 2026.

The PPAs are highly flexible vessels with the capacity to serve multiple roles, ranging from patrolling with sea-rescue capabilities, to civil protection and – in its most highly equipped version – as front-line fighting vessels.

Each PPA is 133 m long between perpendiculars, has a top speed of over 32 knots, and can host a crew up to 180 persons. The MAN 175D GenSets will, on account of the demanding operating conditions, feature double-elastic mounting and, in the Aft Machinery room only, sound enclosures.

In addition to the engines and their related plant equipment, MAN Diesel & Turbo will also supply, in the Aft Machinery room only, its in-house-designed SCR system to ensure an environmentally friendly footprint.

“Programma di Rinnovamento” is a major fleet renewal project that will comprehensively modernise the Italian fleet, allowing older vessels to be retired in the process. MAN Diesel & Turbo has furthermore won the order to supply main and auxiliary engines for a logistics support ship (LSS) and landing helicopter dock (LHD).

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s scope of supply for the LSS covers 2 × 20V32/44CR  main engines (delivering 12,000 kW each) for diesel-mechanical propulsion + 4 × 6L27/38 GenSets (delivering 2,084 kW each).

The scope of supply for the LHD is 2 × 20V32/44CR main engines (delivering 12,000 kW each) + 4 × 9L32/44CR GenSets (delivering 5,400 kW each).

MAN Diesel & Turbo will also supply its in-house-designed SCR system for auxiliary engines.

    About the MAN 175D Engine
MAN Diesel & Turbo developed the 12-cylinder model to supplement and complete its product portfolio in the maritime sector. The new engine is available with an output spectrum from 1,500 to 2,200 Kilowatts and is optimised for propelling ferries, offshore supply vessels, tug boats and working vessels. Other central areas of application such as the markets for super-yachts and marine applications are served by additional, specialist model versions.

“The MAN 175D is compact, reliable and efficient - properties that are of essential importance for use on working vessels to allow safe maneuverability in the most challenging and roughest weather conditions,” said the Project Lead responsible for the MAN 175D, Dr. Matthias Schlipf. “The business case behind it also has to be right for the customer. And this is where the engine sets standards in more than just fuel consumption. Our aspiration is to make the MAN 175D the overall most efficient engine throughout its lifetime.”

The MAN 175D also scores highly in terms of its eco-friendliness. Its compact and modular exhaust gas after-treatment system uses the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) method and is based on the MAN Ad Blue® technology that has undergone many thousands of hours of testing. The engine therefore satisfies the strict environmental standards of the IMO Tier III, while its compact dimensions and low weight make the MAN 175D an efficient powerhouse.”
