Leader class icebreaker is supposed to be built in Saint-Petersburg – USC

New nuclear-powered Leader-class icebreaker which is under development in Russia is supposed to be built in Saint-Petersburg, Yevgeny Zagorodny, Vice-President of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), told IAA PortNews.

According to him, both Baltiysky Zavod and Severnaya Verf are considered as the shipyards that can build the world’s most powerful icebreaker. Modernization of the shipyards is needed to embark on the project.

USC is also looking into building fishing ships at Severnaya Verf shipyard under the USC programme on diversification of the shipyards’ orders.

USC President Aleksei Rakhmanov earlier said about the Corporation’s plans to apply dual-purpuse principle in development of its shipyards (construction of both warships an civil vessels).
