Dmitry Rogozin brings up the issue of making a decision on the time to start the construction of Leader-class icebreaker
The growth of cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route can cause the deficiency of nuclear-powered icebreakers, even taking into consideration successful completion of the project on construction of three LK-60 icebreakers at Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in Saint-Petersburg, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Dmitry Rogozin, Deuputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, as saying at the meeting of the State Commission for Arctic Development held in the framework of the ‘International Arctic Forum ‘Arctic – Territory of Dialogue’ (29-30 March 2017, Arkhangelsk).
According to Dmitry Rogozin, the Chairman of the Arctic Commission, “it is most probably that the theory will have to be translated into practice with going into the issue of building a Leader-class icebreaker designed by Krylov State Research Center.
As Vasily Os’makov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, explained at the meeting, the decision on construction of the Leader-class icebreaker (LK-120) depends to a great extent on the market situation. Besides, Iceberg Central Design Bureau will complete the detailed design of LK-120 by the end of 2017.
“I think, the decision on construction can be made after that”, said Vasily Os’makov.
Aleksei Rakhmanov, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) who also took part in the meeting, added that the USC would be technologically prepared for securing an order on construction of LK-120 at Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in Saint-Petersburg from the end of 2018, when the shipyard modernization is completed.
USC President reminded about availability of high competence and the required licenses at Baltiysky Zavod.
