50-60 fishing ships worth about RUB 200 billion to be built in Russia within 5-6 years

1 March 2018 will see the start of a new application campaign under the ‘keel quota’programme focused on construction of small-size and mid-size vessels. As IAA PortNews correspondent reported from the meeting dedicated to shipbuilding (Moscow), Peotr Savchuk, deputy head of the Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo), expects applications for construction of at least 20 vessels. This year campaign is focused on small and medium businesses of coastal fishery. Besides, distribution of the remained investment quotas for pollock and herring provide for construction of at least 5-6 trawlers.

Also, the work on introduction of amendments into RF Government’s Order on providing investment quotas for crab catching is nearing completion. That will let build about 40 crab catching vessels including 30 units for the Far East and the Northern Basin.

A total of 50-60 newbuilds are expected within 5-6 years, not taking into account the vessels ordered in 2017.

“We would like Far East shipyards to be more actively involved in this process”, said Peotr Savchuk.

The campaign of 2017 numbered 33 applications for construction of fishing ships. According to Rosrybolovstvo, 9 of them came from the Far East (a total of RUB 45 billion) including 6 applications for construction of 108-meter long processing trawlers and 3 applications for construction of 55-meter long seine trawlers. Processing trawlers are to be built by Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard (Saint-Petersburg) by 2023. Investments in their construction total RUB 35 billion. Seine trawlers will be built by Yantar shipyard (Kaliningrad) with the delivery scheduled for 2018.

The companies of the Northern Basin applied for construction 24 vessels (a total of RUB 70 billion) including 14 applications for construction of trawlers of over 80 meters long, 9 applications for mid-size vessels (50 to 80 meters long) and one application a small-size vessel. The contracts for large capacity vessels are awarded to Vyborg Shipyard (Leningrad Region, 8 trawlers) and Severnaya Verf (Saint-Petersburg, 6 trawlers) with the delivery between 2019 and 2023. The orders for construction of small-size and mid-size vessels are placed at Pella (Leningrad Region, 4 seiners), Yaroslavsky Shipyard (2 vessels) and Severnaya Verf (3 vessels) with the deliveries to be completed by 2022.
