In February-March 2018, the companies of the international transportation group UCL Holding — Universal Forwarder, Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg and North-Western Shipping Company — performed a unique joint project on the delivery of oversize cargo to the construction site of Cryogas-Vysotsk, a terminal for production and transshipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Leningrad Region.

The project was implemented within short time frames under challenging conditions of wither navigation.

At the pre-implementation phase, in November 2017, specialists of Universal Forwarder developed a detailed logistic chain, from accepting the foreign ships and coordination of their mooring to coordination of all UCLH company’s activities.

In late February 2018, as scheduled, Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg welcomed the foreign ships from the Arab Emirates and Europe, which delivered two gas liquification units of more than 29 meters in length and weighing 240 tonnes each, two cooling units of more than 24 meters in length and weighing 90 tonnes each, as well as components.

At the port, the bulky cargo was unloaded onto the deck of the floating crane Bogatyr-4 which transported it to the berth No 23, dedicated for heavy-weight cargo. A unique unloading platform had been made of steel beams specially for that operation. Upon completion of the unloading operation, the equipment was consolidated for customs clearance.

Between March 13 and March 15, the first batch of cargo (one unit and supplementary equipment) was loaded at the port by the Bogatyr-4 crane and two portal cranes onto M/V Onyx, a ship of North-Western Shipping Company. The personnel of Volgo-Baltic Logistic, the shipping company’s subsidiary, had developed a preliminary cargo layout for placement of the equipment in the ship’s hold and on the deck to estimate the required number of voyages. Specifications for securing/unsecuring of cargo on the floating crane’s pontoon, in the hold and on the hatch covers of M/V Onyx were approved by Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

Having delivered the first batch of cargo to the port of Vysotsk, the dry cargo carrier returned to Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg, was loaded with the second batch of equipment and delivered it to the port of destination on March 22.

The companies of UCL Holding have an extensive experience in performing transportation of oversize cargo. For more than 10 years they have been involved in ambitious projects of federal importance. Well-organized delivery of equipment to the construction site of Cryogas-Vysotsk, a terminal for production and transshipment of LNG at the port of Vysotsk, has once more confirmed the high level of competence and qualification of UCLH transportation companies’ personnel.

Universal Cargo Logistics Holding (UCL Holding) is an international transportation group established in 2007. The group comprises Freight One, a railway operator with a nationwide network of branches; stevedoring companies Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg, Container terminal Saint-Petersburg and Multipurpose Reloading Complex LLC based in North-West of Russia as well as Tuapse and Taganrog commercial seaports in the South of the country; Volga Shipping Company, North-Western Shipping Company and V.F. Tanker; Okskaya Sudoverf shipyard. The group’s companies employ more than 13,000 people.

UCL Holding companies handle a wide range of cargoes including metal, coal, grain, mineral fertilizers, crude oil and oil products as well as containers. In 2017, the companies of UCL Port, stevedoring division of UCL Holding, handled 37.1 million tonnes of cargo. The group’s companies are involved in efficient business cooperation with more than 5,000 partners including Russian and international leaders.
