Torqeedo receives European Commercial Marine Award for Maritime Sustainability

Torqeedo says it received the European Commercial Marine Awards (ECM) prestigious Maritime Sustainability Award for its outstanding achievements in environmental and sustainability initiatives, July 3 at Seawork International 2018 in Southampton, UK.

Torqeedo was recognized for its contributions to the development of the ECOCAT, an 18-meter, 120-passenger electro-solar vessel recently launched by Metaltec Naval Shipyard and designed by m2 Ingenieria Naval. The ECOCAT runs on 100 percent solar power - it carries no auxiliary combustion engine – and will operate as part of the Mar Menor Ferry fleet. It is powered by two 50 kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors and eight Torqeedo 30.5 kWh high-capacity batteries with technology by BMW i. The vessel can operate more than eight hours on batteries without recharging, even in the absence of sunshine.

The ECM Maritime Sustainability Award is awarded to a company or organization operating within the commercial marine and workboat sector which demonstrates outstanding focus in its environmental and sustainability efforts. This, and other, industry awards are presented on the opening day of the Seawork International Exhibition & Conference.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Mar Menor Ferry, m2 Ingenieria Naval and Metaltec, pioneers in the development of solar-powered commercial vessels,” said Torqeedo CEO Christoph Ballin. “The companies bring a refreshing combination of forward vision, creative ideas and innovative engineering.”

Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water. Founded in 2005 in Starnberg, the company develops and manufactures electric and hybrid drives from 0.5 to 100 kW for commercial applications and recreational use. Torqeedo products are characterized by an uncompromising high-tech focus, maximum efficiency and complete system integration. Torqeedo is part of the DEUTZ Group, one of the world's leading independent suppliers of diesel and natural gas engines.

Metaltec Naval is a leading company in the design and development of innovative shipbuilding and ship conversion projects. Its policy of continued investment and effort on innovation and knowledge, together with the establishment of corporate alliances with the main players in the sector, allows Metaltec to maintain its competitiveness in its main lines of business, after four decades of maritime-naval activity: construction and conversion of professional and recreational vessels, ad hoc customized projects, sustainable ships and boats through materials and/or propulsion systems (aluminum, mixed or pure electric propulsion) or unmanned marine vehicles.

m2 Ingenieria Naval is a company of naval architecture with more than 10 years’ experience specialized in the design of traditional and innovative shipbuilding and ship conversion projects, mainly on recreational crafts, passenger vessels, fishing vessels, workboats, tugs and patrol boats.
