Simplified procedures can boost trade at Russian ports to 25 mln tons, Transport Ministry says

Facilitated border and customs procedures for cargo vessels passing through the Russian seaports could help push cargo traffic volumes up to 25 million tons a year, Deputy Transport Minister Viktor Olersky told annual general meeting of the Union of Russian Shipowners.

In those ports that have already had modern border-crossing and customs posts recently reconstructed or newly built, 100% of vessels are immediately handled upon arrival, and only then the border control and customs officers come on board for random or sometimes physical inspection, Mr. Olersky said. The official mentioned the port of Ust-Luga and its container terminal as an example of such simplified procedures.

"If at least 80% of all vessels in Russian ports will be handled according to the new technology, "on the spot", then the increase of port capacity will reach 25 million tons only through such institutional arrangements with available infrastructure facilities," Mr. Olersky was quoted as saying.
