Total cargo throughput of ports in Jiangsu province surpassed one billion tonnes in 2007 to a record of 1.05 billion, Xinhua reported, quoting statistics of Jiangsu Communication Department.
Container volume handled by ports in the eastern province neighbouring Shanghai surged 44.6 per cent to 6.2 million TEU, including 2 million TEU contributed by Lianyungang port, one million by Taicang and another million by Nanjing, the report said.
Jiangsu invested the most among other provinces in port construction, spending CNY9 billion (US$1.25 billion) in 2007, an increase of 12.2 per cent year on year.
With this investment, Jiangsu added 34 berths with 80 million tonne capacity, increasing the total number of 10,000 tonne berths to 286 with an annual capacity to 890 million tonnes.
