Yangtze cargo tops Mississippi and Rhine in 2007 throughputCargo movements on the China's longest river, the Yangtze, surpassed 1.1 billion tons last year, thus becoming the world's greatest river borne-volume - twice that of the Mississippi's and triple that of the Rhine, Xinhua reported. In 2007, ports along the Yangtze handled a total of 5.5 million TEU, up 37 per cent year on year. Overall throughput tonnage of these ports increased to 911 million tons from 650 million tons in 2005. Total throughput on the Jiangsu, Nanjing and Nantong exceeded 100 million tons.
