Bunker tankers to be restricted at Indonesian car terminal

Indonesia's Tanjung Priok Car Terminal (TPT) is taking steps to restrict bunker tankers and logistical vessels from docking at the terminal following complaints from the terminal operator, reports said.
The operator of TPT has been complaining about the high number of bunker tankers and logistical ships docking near the car terminal, obstructing other ships from berthing and compromising safety.
A circulation letter on the prohibition of ships unrelated with TPT to dock at the terminal will be issued by Tanjung Priok port, according to its administrator Bobby R. Mamahit.
''We have already informed the owners at least five times to remove their bunker tankers anchoring at the car terminal,'' Mamahit told Bunkerworld.
He explained that the bunker tankers should not be docked at TPT as they were only ''waiting for orders''.
The port will also seek alternative locations for the bunker and logistical ships to dock, he said.
An alternative location could be to the west of TPT, although Mamahit admitted it could be quite far for the bunker tankers.
He said the prohibition will be carried out gradually to prepare for the alternative locations.
Gunta Prabawa, head of TPT, said the docking area around the eastern waters of Tanjung Priok port should be restricted.
He added with the bad weather and strong wind at present, special attention was needed to ensure safety distances among ships within the terminal anchorage area.
