Aqaba Container Terminal sees box volumes grow 2pc in 2007

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in Jordan has registered an increase in container handling of two per cent in 2007 compared to 2006
The increase came after a slow start to the year during the first half, said a release from the company. "Although the percentage recorded in container handling in 2007 was less than what was achieved in the years before, we are proud of last year's achievements topped by the uplift in the level of service as well as the continuous cooperation with our clients and the responsible parties to upgrade the level of container handling," said Amin Kawar, chief commercial officer of ACT in a statement.
ACT said it saw growth in the volume of exported cargo during 2007. Moreover, the company opened a documentation and client-servicing centre last year in cooperation with Standard Chartered Bank to finalise paperwork and pay fees at the bank. ACT also attracted last year two new marine routes linking the port of Aqaba directly with the Far East.
"ACT now serves more than 22 global shipping lines, 10 of which are directly served. In addition, a number of main lines have raised the volume and efficiency of its services from and to Aqaba, connecting ACT with most of the international networks for container handling," said Mr Kawar.
