The logistics support vessel (LSV) of Project 23120 "Elbrus" left Severnaya Verf Shiyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corp.) to the northern latitudes for the final set of sea trials, or acceptance trials. The shipbuilders have complied with several points of customer's requirements, the shipbuilder said in a press release.
The transition to the North will take 10 days. During the voyage, the crew and shipbuilders will be testing the seaworthiness, the propulsion, multi-beam echo sounder and the cathodic protection system of the vessel. Upon arrival at the destination, for three weeks the LSV Elbrus crew will be testing the ship's key systems and onboard equipment, and conduct joint aircraft and ship actions.
In July Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov while inspecting the company's ships under construction noted that the shipbuilders had managed to overcame the difficulties associated with substitution of Elbrus's imported equipment. Previously, the vessel was scheduled for delivery in 2016.
Upon the successful sea trials completion the LSV Elbrus will be commissioned and enter service with the Russian Navy.
The Project 23120 series vessels feature versatility, capable of performing a wide range of tasks: the transport of cargo, including ship-to-ship transfer of supplies on the high seas; towing operations; escort of ships performing combat missions; salvage and rescue of stricken ships and seafarers; seabed survey and mapping. The "Elbrus" hull was built to ARC4 class to sail in 0.6-meter-thick ice.
