Port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 6.59 mln t of cargo in 2017, up 16% Y-o-Y

Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja, Latvia in January-December 2017 climbed by 16%, year-on-year, to 6.59 mln t, the Port Authority says.

In the reporting period, transshipment of coal grew by 18% to 1.2 mln t, grain transshipment – down 12.7% to 2.5 mln t, construction materials – up 26% to 625,300 t, oil products – up 37.5% to 376,100 t, Ro-Ro – up 29% to 39,261 units.

Container traffic grew by 66% to 3,829 TEUs, the number of calls climbed by 6% to 1,444, passenger traffic increased by 25% to 41,111 passengers..

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2016, throughput of Liepaja port was 5.68 million tonnes.
