Vyacheslav Ruksha, head of Rosatom’s Northern Sea Route Directorate

On demand for nuclear-powered icebreakers and outlook for cargo traffic on the NSR

    - In November, the Arktika icebreaker starts the first-of-the-class trials and sea trials. It is a milestone event to make sure before navigation 2020 starts that the icebreaker is able to provide everything it is designed for. Its complete delivery is expected in May 2020. The next icebreakers – in 2021-22. The Yamal LNG project has reached its design capacity, the Arctic Gate project of Gazprom Neft is in successful operation... Operation of the Norilsk Works is also stable. Two or three additional projects are needed to reach annual cargo traffic of 80 million tonnes which is possible with year-round navigation. Therefore, I hope that Baltiysky Zavod will not postpone the issue of building the third and the forth serial icebreakers by two years since we are not to be late for the launching of new projects.
