    Около 80% фактов пиратских нападений на суда замалчивается и только 20% всех инцидентов предаются огласке. Как передает пресс-служба Российского профсоюза моряков, соответствующие данные опубликовала организация Gulf of Aden Group Transits Limited.

    Ранее специалисты морской охраной фирмы Typhon заявляли, что компании, чьи суда были атакованы пиратами, находят способы оставить произошедшее в тайне, чтобы избежать долгого процесса отчетности, а это приводит к искажению реальных цифр по пиратству.

    По данным GoAGT, одна из основных причин снижения пиратства в Сомали – присутствие военных кораблей, которые сопровождают торговые суда и патрулируют опасные воды. Между тем, пока военно-морские силы сконцентрированы в этом регионе и являются сдерживающим фактором, в Гвинейском заливе пиратство набирает обороты. Согласованных мер по обеспечению безопасности на Западе Африки нет.

    Согласно последнему отчету Международного морского бюро (IMB), никогда ранее пираты не атаковали суда далеко на юге и западе Африки. Существует вероятность, что экипажи судов могут даже не знать о поджидающей их опасности в южных водах. Так, в 2013 году на долю нигерийских пиратов пришлась 31 атака из 51 инцидента, зафиксированного в Западной Африке, что в целом составило 19% от зарегистрированных по всему миру. По мнению специалистов GoAGT, именно здесь пиратство станет большой угрозой судоходству, как в свое время произошло с Аденским заливом. При этом в GoAGT считают маловероятным разворачивание каких-либо серьезных мер по защите судов в Гвинейском заливе, по крайней мере, в 2014 году.
