Alfa Laval wins SEK 75 million order for marine exhaust gas cleaning systems

Alfa Laval – a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling – has won an order to retrofit Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems onboard four vessels. The order, which comes from a new customer in Germany, is booked in the Marine & Offshore Systems segment. It has a value of approximately SEK 75 million and delivery is scheduled for 2015.

The order comprises hybrid systems for four RoRo vessels (ships with built-in ramps that allow the cargo to be efficiently rolled on and off the vessel when in port). A hybrid system enables switching between open and closed loop, giving a unique operational flexibility.

“I am very pleased to announce yet another scrubber order. The fact that it comes from a new customer confirms our system’s reliability and performance in reducing sulphur oxide, be it for retrofits or for installation onboard new vessels,” says Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group.

IMO’s convention for the reduction of sulphur oxides (SOx) will affect all vessels, both new and existing. The convention demands that sulphur emission levels in certain Emission Control Areas (ECAs) shall be cut to 0.1 percent from the year 2015 and that the global emission level must not exceed 0.5 percent from the year 2020. To reach these levels ship owners can either use more expensive low-sulphur fuel or, on vessels where it is suitable, continue to run the ship on heavy fuel oil and invest in a scrubber such as Alfa Laval’s PureSOx.
