Paul M. Romer to place endogenous growth theory in ocean context at Nor-Shipping

Nor-Shipping 2019 will provide a unique insight into how the latest economic thinking can help drive development within the ocean space at its Ocean Leadership Conference on 4 June. 2018 Nobel Laureate in Economics Paul M. Romer will deliver a keynote focusing on his ground-breaking ‘endogenous growth theory’, discussing how people, businesses and society can ‘choose’ commercial growth in the ocean industries.

    The power to grow

“Endogenous growth theory is a hot topic and a very relevant model for industry and society, both of which require new levels of commercial activity connected to the ocean,” comments Nor-Shipping Director Per Martin Tanggaard. “Paul Romer’s work centres on the idea that investment in human capital, innovation and the development of knowledge unlock economic growth.

“Basically this means we have the ability to ‘choose’ growth. By working together, defining opportunity, sharing knowledge, and driving innovation and sustainable solutions we can deliver on the huge potential of the ocean space to provide the energy, nutrition and resources the world needs.

“This is what we are aiming to help enable at Nor-Shipping 2019, Your Arena for Ocean Solutions, and Paul Romer will help point our conference audience in the right direction to move forwards. It really is a one of a kind opportunity to connect with a true genius within his field.”

    Meeting of minds

The Nobel Laureate’s appearance is indicative of Nor-Shipping’s ambition to refine its traditional opening conference, building it into a globally renowned event gathering true leaders within the maritime, ocean, business and public arenas on the same stage. Other high profile names speaking at the event include IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Lise Kingo, CEO of the UN Global Compact, and Admiral Michael Rogers, the former director of the National Security Agency (NSA).

“This is quite unlike anything that has come before it in our industry,” Tanggaard notes. “To realise the potential of the ocean in a responsible, profitable and sustainable manner we need a breadth of expertise and understanding from a wide spectrum of stakeholders.

“As such, we’re trying to gather the leading minds to unlock the greatest value, giving our audience memorable, actionable and truly beneficial takeaways. Paul Romer is absolutely key to that ambition.”

    Gathering anticipation

His appearance at Nor-Shipping will involve a high-level keynote presentation and more informal ‘conversation with’ discussion, also featuring Kristin Holth, Head of Ocean Industries at DNB. The Ocean Leadership Conference will be held at the Thon Hotel Arena Lillestrøm, sitting adjacent to Nor-Shipping’s main 21,000m2 exhibition space.

Nor-Shipping 2019 takes place from 04 to 07 June 2019. In total over 30,000 key decision makers are expected to attend the international event week, with around 1000 exhibiting companies showcasing the very latest products, services and innovations.

Nor-Shipping 2019 takes place in Oslo and Lillestrøm, Norway, from 04 to 07 June 2019.
