Port of Gdynia prepares to develop acquired land at Węgierskie Quay

The lease contract of the area where Vistal shipyard operates terminates only in 2021, however the Port of Gdynia already today is taking concrete measures to maximise efficiency of its port infrastructure, Port of Gdynia says in a press release.

On 24 October 2019 the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. signed an agreement for developing a design documentation for the construction of manoeuvring and storage areas at the Węgierskie Quay. The company winning the open tender is the Gdynia-based design studio called WUPROHYD Sp. z o.o., and the contract in question is worth 1,733,661.63 PLN gross.

The design will include: land use on more than 45 000 m2  in a manner ensuring optimisation of cargo handling and storage capacities, including yards adjusted to storing general cargo (i.e. paper, cellulose, steel, big-bags, wood-based products, heavy lifts, oversized cargo (including offshore), elements of project cargo, semi-trailers, cars, other vehicles and machines) and bulk cargo ( i.e. cereals, fodder, biomass, coal, coke and aggregate); road system and railway infrastructure with an analysis of cargo effectiveness, taking into account the present pier development; redevelopment of the  Węgierskie Quay on a stretch of 700 linear meters in order to align mooring line at the entire quay length, minimizing exit to sea and taking into account the designed cut structure of the Słowackie Quay, providing technical depth of 15.5 meters, completing a section of the Węgierskie Quay at a stretch of minimum 120 m with reinforced carrying capacity adjusted to handle heavy items, also offshore: redevelopment of the existing infrastructure and construction of a new one, equipped with media on the entire area of planned investment.

    Delivery date: approximately 2 years

Redevelopment of quays, new turntable and deepening inner port areas are key elements of the Port of Gdynia development. They are of structural significance for Poland and Trans-European Transport Network. The deepening of access fairway and internal port areas is to first of all increase port competitiveness in the Baltic Sea region and in the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network.

Once completed, it will contribute to improving navigational parameters of the port itself and to increasing competitiveness of maritime transport as the most environment-friendly means of transport.

For this aim, the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. has obtained significant financing for the investment covering important elements of the port development, i.e. “Deepening of the access fairway and internal sea areas of the Port of Gdynia – stages 1 and 3 and the redevelopment of quays in the Port of Gdynia – stages 2 and 3”, contract no. POIS.03.02.00-00-0070/18-00.

Thanks to UE funds, investments in port infrastructure result not only in national development, but – what is very important – create new workplaces in the area. One workplace at the port stimulates employment of four people in port-related industries.

Furthermore, according to information from tax authorities, operation of the Port of Gdynia brings more than 6 billion PLN per year. This income comes from duties and taxes collected on trade in goods performed by specialized cargo handling terminals at the Port of Gdynia. In 2018 the Port of Gdynia paid an amount of 14,285,000 PLN to the City of Gdynia budget, and after building the Outer Port it is estimated that this amount will grow to 22 685 000 PLN.
