    Канал имени Москвы сегодня празднует свое 85-летие. За время существования по каналу прошло 8,45 млн судов, из них более 6 млн грузовых, 1,5 млн пассажирских и 845 тыс. технического, вспомогательного флота и маломерных судов. Также за все это время было перевезено 1266,5 млн тонн грузов и 152,5 млн пассажиров, сообщается на сайте ФГБУ «Канал имени Москвы».

    Строительство канала было начато в 1931 году, а в постоянную эксплуатацию канал Москва ‒ Волга был принят 15 июля 1937 года. Строители прошли почти 130 км, удалили более 150 млн куб. м породы, чтобы соединить совершенно обмелевшую Москву-реку с Волгой. Работы, начатые преимущественное вручную, постепенно механизировались: был создан уникальный по тем временам экскаваторный парк, насчитывавший более 170 мощных землеройных машин, введены в строй системы ленточных транспортеров, подающих бетон. 

    За время строительства канала было введено более 200 гидротехнических сооружений, в том числе 109 км судоходных каналов, 11 судоходных шлюзов, пять насосных станций и восемь гидроэлектростанций.

    Постановлением от 9 апреля 1937 года было создано управление эксплуатации канала.

    На сегодняшний день ФГБУ «Канал имени Москвы» является крупнейшим воднотранспортным и водохозяйственным комплексом, выполняющим функции органа государственного управления на внутренних водных путях 12 субъектов РФ. Это Москва, Московская, Тульская, Тверская, Вологодская, Ярославская, Новгородская, Рязанская, Владимирская, Калужская, часть Нижегородской, а также Ивановская области. В структуре учреждения функционирует 10 филиалов, сформированных по территориальному принципу: семь районов гидротехнических сооружений.

    Объекты учреждения включают 233 гидротехнических сооружения: 20 судоходных шлюзов, 5 насосных станций (перекачивают около 1,5 млрд куб. м воды в год), 7 гидроэлектростанций суммарной мощностью 66 мегаватт (эти ГЭС ежегодно могут вырабатывать 215 млн киловатт-часов энергии), 29 плотин, 12 земляных дамб, а также каналы, причалы и другие гидротехнические сооружения. Учреждение эксплуатирует 3840 км водных путей, образующих Московский бассейн внутренних водных путей. Технический флот учреждения насчитывает 200 единиц судов различного назначения.

    В настоящее время стартовала программа модернизации Канала имени Москвы, которую планируется завершить к его 100-летию.
