Envision Energy has joined the pilot phase of the AEA Ammonia Certification System, a framework aimed at standardising verification and enabling international trade in low-emission ammonia, according to Envision Energy.
The system enables certification of carbon intensity and origin using independently verified data, supported by a digital registry operated by MiQ that ensures traceability from issuance through trading to retirement.
The pilot includes three chain-of-custody models — Segregated, Mass Balance and Book & Claim — with Envision Energy selecting Book & Claim to avoid constraints tied to physical cargo movement.
The model separates environmental attributes from physical supply, allowing transactions without transporting volumes and reducing cost and emissions exposure across long-haul routes.
Frank Yu, senior vice president of Envision Energy, said the approach allows customers to decarbonise operations regardless of distance from production hubs and supports the development of ammonia as a net-zero commodity.
Trevor Brown, executive director of the Ammonia Energy Association, said the pilot will test certification models against varying market requirements as demand for low-emission ammonia expands, particularly in Asia-Pacific.
The move follows Envision’s first end-to-end commercial shipment of green ammonia from its Chifeng industrial park to the Port of Ulsan in March 2026, covering production, certification and maritime logistics.
The company commissioned a hydrogen and ammonia facility with annual capacity of 320,000 tonnes in July 2025, designed for industrial-scale optimisation.
