Axpo has completed the first LNG bunkering of a cruise ship at the Port of Naples, supplying Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess on 24 May from the LNG bunkering tanker Green Zeebrugge, according to Axpo.
The ship-to-ship operation was coordinated with Carnival Corporation, the Port System Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea and Terminal Napoli.
Daniele Corti, Axpo’s head of small-scale LNG, said the operation showed that “an alternative fuel infrastructure is truly up and running”.
Carnival Corporation senior vice president, maritime policy and analysis John Haeflinger said broader availability of alternative fuels at key ports was important to the group’s emissions-reduction efforts.
Axpo is a Swiss energy company active in power generation, energy trading, renewable energy marketing and customer energy solutions.
Carnival Corporation is a cruise group whose brands include Princess Cruises.
Princess Cruises is a passenger cruise line within Carnival Corporation’s portfolio.
