NYK launches one-year 100% B100 biofuel trial on pure car carrier

Japanese shipping company NYK has started a one-year trial using 100% B100 biofuel on an NYK-operated pure car carrier to assess its impact on main engines, generators and fuel systems, according to an official NYK press release.

The B100 fuel is produced primarily from FAME derived from used cooking oils. NYK has previously tested B24 and B30 blends, but continuous operation on 100% biofuel has not been widely implemented.

The trial will collect operational data on equipment performance, fuel handling, and technical reliability during extended use.

The experiment is intended to support practical knowledge and safety measures for high-purity biofuel use in commercial shipping.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) is a Japanese shipping and logistics corporation headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1885, NYK operates liner services, logistics, vehicle transportation, dry bulk and energy-related shipping globally.
