Norwegian bunker firm Azane signs world-first ammonia supply deal with Equinor

Norwegian ammonia bunkering specialist Azane Fuel Solutions has signed a framework agreement with Equinor Energy covering ammonia fuel supply and truck-to-ship bunkering operations, according to Azane Fuel Solutions.

Azane said the deal is the world’s first framework agreement of its kind, with the first deliveries scheduled for the second half of 2026.  The company said the agreement is “another step toward making ammonia-fuelled shipping a commercial reality”.

Financial terms, contracted volumes and the locations of the first deliveries were not disclosed.

Azane and Equinor have worked together since 2023 through the AFNO 2030 project, which examined ammonia fuel logistics, bunkering infrastructure, operational planning and safety for Norway’s offshore sector.

Separately, Eidesvik Offshore’s platform supply vessel Viking Energy is undergoing conversion to ammonia propulsion at Halsnøy Dock and is due to operate on ammonia for Equinor after the retrofit. Equinor has said the project is intended to cut the vessel’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70%.

Azane Infrastructure, an Azane subsidiary established in 2025 to develop and operate ammonia bunkering infrastructure, secured NOK 442m ($47.4m) in support from Norwegian state energy agency Enova for terminals at Florø, Stavanger and Mongstad.

The three facilities are targeted to be operational by 2029.

Azane Fuel Solutions, founded in 2021, is a privately owned Norwegian maritime technology company headquartered in Oslo and Sandefjord that develops ammonia bunkering terminals and fuel-handling systems.

Equinor Energy is part of Norwegian energy group Equinor, while Eidesvik Offshore is a Norwegian offshore vessel owner and operator.

Enova is a Norwegian state enterprise that supports energy and climate technology projects.
