Salla 2 ship of an Israeli ship-owner (under the flag of Togo) sank in the Mediterranean Sea. The incident occurred on Dec. 11, 2009 around 22:00, LT at a distance of 80 km from the port city of Haifa, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine reports.
There were reportedly 12 crew members on board, all of them citizens of Ukraine.
According to the latest information of the Rescue Center of Larnaca, at this time six crew members have been found and rescued. Despite the difficult weather conditions, all rescue and search operations are continuing. Two vessels and two helicopters have been involved in the rescue operation.
The State Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine (Odessa) is keeping contact with the Rescue Center of Larnaca (Cyprus).
The ship was built in 1975. Before August 2009 Salla2 ship was operating under the name of Mira and the flag of the Slovak Republic. It was repeatedly delayed by the ship inspection control.
