Rotterdam to raise port dues by 1pc

THE European Port of Rotterdam has announced that its seaport, quay and inner port dues will go up in 2009 by one per cent over the previous year.
A statement from port authorities said "stagnating economic growth as a result of the credit crisis played a significant role" in determining the increase in port dues which will be applied across all sectors using the port.
The level set for the higher port charges was also said to have also taken into account Rotterdam's competitive position in relation to the other ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range.
It was noted that the rise in port dues is less than the reference level of 1.6 per cent inflation. "In contrast to previous years, the rise in tariffs for 2009 is clearly lagging behind inflation," the release said.
It added that the decision to raise fees was made following consultation with the market, coordinated by Deltalinqs.
