A solemn foundation stone laying ceremony for a new passenger terminal was held in Russia’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The ceremonial event started the construction of seaport buildings and facilities, scheduled for completion within two years, the regional government’s press office said.
Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Ilyukhin, who attended the ceremony, said that he regarded the sea as one of the key element in economic development of the Russia’s peninsula, helping to solve state problems. "First of all this is the development of the port of Petropavlovsk as a transit hub in the framework of the Northern Sea Route. It is also important for the local residents: with new sea gateway we’ll have the passenger and cargo transportation resumed," the official said.
Besides, the local authorities plan to build piers in remote regions, to renovate the existing piers at the port of Petropavlovsk and to order a passenger vessel, said the head of the Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport Alexander Davydenko.
The construction of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky passenger terminal will be funded through the Federal target program "Economic and Social Development of the Far East and Transbaikalia until 2013." The federal government had allocated in the budget RUB 469.5 million for project. The seaport building will house the customs post and border crossing point. The design capacity of the new building is 200 people, the checkpoint capacity - about 200 people / hour.
