Maersk increases bunker surcharges

Maersk Line has announced an increase in bunker fuel surcharges between Mediterranean ports and the US and Canada, effective from October 1, 2007.
The new surcharges under the Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) will be $525 per TEU, up from $453, and $1,050 per FEU, up from $906.
Transatlantic cargo to and from the following countries will be affected: US, Canada, Russia (via Black Sea ports), Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Italy, Cyprus, Albania, San Marino, Slovenia, Egypt, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Syria, Serbia & Montenegro, Croatia, Turkey, Lebanon, Macedonia, Greece, Malta, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Andorra, Gibraltar, and France (via Mediterranean ports).
The application of BAF allows Maersk Line and other container carriers to seek compensation for changes in bunker costs. An increase in the cost of purchasing bunkers would lead to an increase in BAF and vice versa.
