    Indicators of Latvia’s port activities in the 1st quarter of 2008

    According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau, cargo turnover at ports in January – March 2008 reached 16.8 mln tons, what is 12.7% more if compared to the 1st quarter of 2007.
    In 2008 15.4 mln tons were loaded at ports, what constituted an increase of 16%. In January – March 2008 6.2 mln tons of oil products were loaded at ports, what compared to the January – March of 2007 is a rise of 21.4%. The volume of coal loaded at ports reached 4.5 mln tons (increase of 33.9%). Bu the volume of crude oil loaded at ports has decreased by 22% and it constituted 0.3 mln tons. The volume of mineral fertilisers loaded at ports has also reduced. In the three months of 2008 1.1 mln ton of mineral fertilizers was loaded – 31.8% less than in the corresponding period of 2007. The volume of timber loaded at ports constituted 1 mln tons, and it has retained the level of the 1st quarter of previous year.
    The volume of cargo unloaded at the ports has decreased. In January-March of 2008 1.4 mln tons of cargos were unloaded at ports, an increase of 13.7% if compared to the 3 months of 2007. Cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded: 0.3 mln tons, that represents a decrease of 2.1% if compared to the 1st quarter of previous year. 0.2 mln tons of roll on/roll off cargos were unloaded at the ports – a reduction of 14.4%, and decrease of unloaded crude oil represents 36.6%. But the volume of oil products has increased by 19.5%, and of construction materials - by 18.7%. The volume of sugar unloaded at ports has decreased 4.3 times, and in the 1st quarter of 2008 it constituted 35.9 thsd tons.
    In January-March 2008 8.4 mln tons of cargos were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils, an increase of 6.9 % in comparison with the corresponding period of 2007. The volume of cargos loaded at the port of Ventspils has increased by 10.6% and constituted 7.8 mln tons. But the volume of unloaded cargos has reduced by 27.4%.
    If compared to January – March 2007, the cargo turnover at the port of Riga in the 3 months of 2008 has increased by 20.4% and reached 7 mln tons. 6.3 mln tons of cargos were loaded at the port of Riga, what is 22.6% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. But 0.7 mln tons of cargos were unloaded at the port of Riga, what is up by 2.8 % than in the three months of the previous year.
    Cargo turnover at the port of Liepaja in the 3 months of 2008 was 1.1 mln tons, and this is an increase of 14.7% if compared to the 1st quarter of 2007. 1 mln tons of cargos were loaded at the port of Liepaja, an increase of 21.3 % if compared to the corresponding period of previous year. In January-March 2008 the volume of cargos unloaded at the port of Liepaja has decreased and reached 0.1 mln t, what is 13.9 % less than in the relevant period of previous year.
    In comparison with the previous year, cargo turnover at the minor ports in the 1st quarter of 2008 has increased. In the 3 months of 2008 the volume of cargos loaded and unloaded at the minor ports was 0.3 mln t, an increase of 8.7 % if compared to the 1st quarter of previous year.
