Bangladesh to open first river container terminal
The first Inland Container River Terminal in Bangladesh, being built at an estimated cost of US$25.5 million, is likely to open early next year on the Buriganga River, the Bangladesh New Nation reported.
Shipping minister Shajahan Khan said the government is working to demolish illegal structures on the banks of all rivers around Dhaka City to free the Buriganga from pollution.
Shajahan said the eviction drive has already been started at Gabtoli area of the Buriganga River to remove the illegal structures of sand traders.
The seaport is being designed with the specific purpose of transporting containers from Chittagong and Mongla seaports through waterways across the country as an alternative to the more costly road and rail options.
