South Korea's major seaports container volumes up to 1.72 million TEUs in May
The volume of cargo handled at South Korea's major seaports hit a monthly record high in May on the back of the global economic recovery, Yonhap English News reported.
According to the data compiled by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, a total of 1.72 million TEUs were processed at the ports in May, up 29 percent from 1.33 million TEUs a year earlier.
The May figure was a record high on a monthly basis. The previous record was posted in March 2008, when the corresponding figure was 1.65 million.
Busan was the nation's busiest port last month, with container cargo reaching 1.27 million TEUs, accounting for 74 percent of the total cargo traffic in the country.
Cargo volume at the port of Gwangyang jumped 4.9 percent from a year earlier to a record 184,000 TEUs in May, while that at Incheon soared 24 percent to 162,000 TEUs during the period.
