BP caps the leaking oil well
BP has lowered a cap onto a leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, to pipe some of the oil to ships on the surface, BBC reports citing the oil company statement.
According to BP it could not stop fully the oil flow from the gusher until August, when two relief wells will be completed.
The current attempt followed several earlier efforts to contain the spill.
A funnel-like cap has been placed on top, which if successful, would improve oil recovery and BP would hope to collect the oil on a surface ship above the well.
The placement of the cap was a positive development, but that it would be "some time before we can confirm that this method will work and to what extent it will mitigate the release of oil into the environment", BBS quoted the US Coast Guard representatives as saying.
