Freight traffic via the Volga-Baltic Canal to increase two times as much by 2025, to 33,8 million tons
The volume of freight traffic passing through the Volga-Baltic Canal may increase to 33.8 million tons by 2025, or a twofold surge, the St. Petersburg Govt’s said. The forecast numbers were published in the decree issued by the Government of St. Petersburg on May 17, 2010 N588 «The main provisions of the river transport infrastructure layout scheme on the territory of St. Petersburg”.
A 44-km part of the Volga-Baltic Canal and 32 other waterways lie within the boundaries of St Petersburg waterway network. Neva is a link of a Single deep waterway system of Russia. During the navigation season about 7,000 vessels pass via the Neva River, or over 40 ships daily during peak months.
