India's ports cargo volume up 3.5 percent in April-May
Cargo volume at major ports in India grew 3.5 percent in the April-May period compared with a year earlier, according to latest traffic figures released by the Indian Ports Association.
The country’s 12 state-run ports handled 94.4 million tons of cargo in the first two months of fiscal 2010-11, up from 91.2 million tons in the year-ago period.
The IPA data indicates that the ports of Kandla, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), Chennai and Mumbai boosted their throughput on a year-on-year basis.
Kandla topped volume at 13.7 million tons, followed by Mormugao with 10.6 million tons; Nehru, 10.5 million tons; Chennai, 10.2 million tons; Visakhapatnam, 10 million tons; and Mumbai, 9.6 million tons.
Consolidated throughput in May increased 4.5 percent to 47.8 million tons from 45.7 million tons in the same month in fiscal 2009-10.
