Port of Sochi ceases handling imports from September 1st
Port of Sochi from September 1 stops accepting imported goods as it begins construction of a new passenger terminal, RIA Novosti reports quoting Russian Deputy Minister of Transport Viktor Olersky.
"Acceptance of goods coming from foreign countries by sea, will be implemented in the ports of Tuapse, Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk", Victor Olersky said.
According to him, additional terminal facilities will be launched at those three ports by the fall. That would help meet the current needs of shippers.
Victor Olersky noted that now at the port of Kavkaz a specialized terminal is being under construction intended for handling seaborne cargoes, from vessels with horizontal loading and offloading. Besides, there will be a transport and logistics center built nearby. Upon its completion, all handling operations with cargoes transported from ports by road transport will be moved to the port of Kavkaz.
"The main reason for such a step is the need to relieve Adler-Novorossiysk highway tight traffic ", the official said.
Currently, most of the goods for building of the Olympics infrastructure in Sochi area, for economic reasons are delivered by rail, Mr. Olersky said.
"Oversized, imported equipment, as well as some construction materials and aggregates are transported by water for further transfer at Imeretinsky port", he said.
