Gazprom and Sovcomflot deal to transport Shtokman LNG
Gazprom OJSC and Sovcomflot OJSC have signed an agreement on cooperation in maritime transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Shtokman field, the companies’ joint press release said.
The document was signed today by the Chairman of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, CEO of Sovcomflot Sergey Frank, during the XIV St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The document, in particular, involves interaction of companies in developing logistic schemes of transportation of LNG, determining the optimal technical parameters of the liquefied gas vessels, as well as the configuration of the fleet needed to implement the Shtokman project. The companies agreed to give priority to the Russian shipyards placing orders for new ships on a competitive basis.
The new vessels will be built using the Green Ship Technology, which reduces the negative impact of tankers on the environment. It is also expected to apply the dual-fuel diesel engines, capable of running on liquid fuels and natural gas, which significantly reduce harmful emissions and increase engine efficiency.
The Shtokman field is located in the central part of the Russian sector of the Barents Sea. Shtokman's field holds an estimated 3.9 trillion cubic meters of gas and 56.1 million metric tons of gas condensate, of which 3.8 trillion c.m. of gas and 53.4 million tons of gas condensate are in the Gazprom licensed area.
Project development of the Shtokman gas condensate field has been of strategic importance for Gazprom. This field will become a resource base for Russian gas supplies (as well pipeline, as obtained with the use of LNG technology) to the Atlantic basin markets.
Gazprom's partners in the Shtokman project are Total (France) and Statoil (Norway). In February 2008 Gazprom, Total and StatoilHydro signed a stockholders' agreement to establish Shtokman Development AG joint venture (reg. in Swiss’ Zug) for design, development, construction, financing and operation of the first phase of the Shtokman field. SD AG will be the owner of the facilities of the Shtokman’s first phase for 25 years from the field commissioning.
The final investment decision on the production of pipeline gas is expected to be adopted in March 2011, a decision on LNG production - at the second stage - before the end of 2011. This approach will allow beginning the production of gas for delivery via the pipeline in 2016 and ensuring the production of LNG in 2017.
Sovcomflot Group is one of the largest infrastructure companies in Russia, Its fleet comprises 146 ships of total deadweight of more than 10 million tons. The company shipbuilding program includes 10 ships of total 800,000 DWT. The average age of the Sovcomflot’s tanker fleet is about 7 years (world average - 12 years). The Group ranks first in the world in the segment of commodities carriers, the second - in Aframax vessels. The company has the largest in the world Ice Class vessels fleet. It is also the top leading operator of Arctic shuttle tankers and ships - gas tankers with Ice Class.
