Dhamra Port to start operations by August 2010
Dhamra Port Company Limited a 50:50 JV between TATA Steel and L&T has invested INR 2700 crore so far out of the total project cost of INR 3239 crore and 96% work on the project has been completed.
DPCL has executed 100% work on jetty, materials handling, transmission line, dredging, reclamation and soil stabilization. It has completed 95% work on water supply and 87% work on railways while the work on the residential colony which is underway is 52% completed.
The port project is set to be operational by August 2010 and it has hitherto generated jobs for 2881 people out of which 2071 are locals.
The state government has assessed the land requirement of the port at 1215.42 acres and the work on alienation of this patch of land is underway.
Besides, DPCL which needs 1565.93 acres of land for road and railway connectivity has submitted the land schedule for the same and it is under the consideration of the state government.
DPCL had inked a MoU with the state government in March 1997. The port would have an initial capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum which would be eventually scaled up to 109 million tonnes per annum. The port would transport bulk cargo like iron ore, chromite, coal, limestone, bauxite and dolomite.
It may be noted that the state government has identified as many as 19 locations for the development of minor ports. These locations include Inchudi, Bichitrapur, Barunei Muhan, Palur, Palur, Bhauda Muhan and Baliharchandi to name a few.
