Lithuanian company to build the world's largest ferry for Norwegian Fjord
Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 signed a contract worth 163.6m litas with Estonian Fisker Strand BLRT (includes the Norwegian Fiskerstrand Verft and the Lithuanian Vakaru Laivu Gamykla Shipyard) for building the world's largest gas-powered ferry. This is one of the largest shipbuilding projects for Lithuania, Lithuanian Courier said.
"We’ve managed to get a contract for the construction of such a large ferry, when our shipbuilding industry is facing hard times. This proves that we are able to compete with other shipyards in Europe", says Rolph Fiskerstrand, CEO of Fiskerstrand BLRT.
The ferry’s hull and its original equipment will be manufactured in Klaipeda, and the works to be completed at Fiskerstrand Verft.
The ship completion is scheduled on Nov. 30, 2011.
The Multi Maritime design ferry can carry 242 cars and 600 passengers. The 129-m-long, 1.3dwt ship with 3 Rolls-Royce gas engines and generators has maximum speed around 20 knots.
The ferry will be operating on the route Mortavika - Arsvagen and Halhem - Sandvikvag between the Norwegian cities of Bergen and Stavanger.
